Romance isn't necessary in everything, it can even come across as really strange, depending on the genre or atmosphere of the entire story to begin with.

I'd rather have a story with minimal to no romance in it, than have it squeeze its way into the plot at the most inopportune times. I'm writing a Fushigi Yuugi fanfic and, sure, one of the guys gets a small crush on the priestess, but it's maybe one or two scenes and never goes beyond importance than those two scenes.

If anything, that's the one that has the least amount of romance in it.

She's grating, annoying, rude, impolite and even though the story tries to make me feel sorry for her many times which I genuinely didshe'd always say things to make me hate her again. It's really too bad too, because Elle's backstory's well thought out.

But to the writers' credits, it's not like the old cast give her all the attention. The main character, I thought, was really well done. He's mute, but for a mute character, he has an elaborate backstory and I actually cared for his fate.
