Which is best among all the Cod titles? That has always been up for debate, but you’ll find that Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is almost always towards the top of any list.
In COD4:MW we first saw what would eventually become some of the franchises signature features, like custom loadouts and killstreaks.
You can get even more out of COD4:MW through the various mods available, adding loads of new content – whether you’re playing single or multiplayer.
Let’s take a look at dig into some top mods for replaying this incredible title.
15. Russian Warfare
One of the biggest criticisms Modern Warfare was that the single player campaign was way too short.
Well in case you feel the same way, the mod community offers some options for alternative solo campaigns to play through.
VikmorMor’s Russian Warfare is one such example, promising to include everything fans love about the series.
The mod of course includes Price, along with other popular Call of Duty characters like Sandman and Vermouth.
Russian Warfare contains 18 missions, each highlighting different aspects of gameplay, which should make for an interesting playthrough.
14. Heroes 7 and Brothers 2.0
Once you’ve crossed Russian Warfare off the list, you might want to give sam_fisher3000’s Heroes 7 and Brothers a go.
You’ll be able to play through a plot of suspicion and betrayal, as a private military group believes that there is still an active terrorist group in Iraq.
The campaign plays out in 5 parts, offering a completely unique storyline from the original.
The mod features custom voice acting as well, which is a nice added touch.
13. A Call of Duty SP Mission:Rush
A Call of Duty SP Mission:Rush sets itself apart in that it actually takes place within the same storyline as the base game.
It takes us to the events directly following the ending of the first act, where the nuclear attack has just taken place.
You find yourself in enemy territory, but you remember this area was tagged as clear – which means rescue most likely isn’t coming.
Based on some of the comments, enemies in this mod are built like tanks and take a lot more to kill – which is good if you’re up for a challenge.
12. Operation Cinema: Beyond Modern Warfare
Now if you’re looking for a single-player experience like no other, Operation Cinema: Beyond Modern Warfare is the mod to try out.
This is unique in that it completely turns its back on one of COD’s most significant features – linear maps.
Operation Cinema is based on an 8-man assault on the Bulgarian city of Rousse, where you’ll be able to explore the map freely unlike any COD mission before.
11. [CoD] MW2 Mod
If you’re looking to add some fresh content without playing an entirely new campaign, we’ve got ways to do that as well.
[=TCF=]Vince-Tk’s MW2 Mod is a great example.
It brings some of the more advanced weaponry of Modern Warfare 2 over to COD4.
The mod adds over 20 guns from the more recent Modern Warfare release, so you’ll have most of your favorite weapons here as well.
There are also added game modes, menu screens, and sounds from MW2, so if you’re a fan of the second release, you might want to give this a try.
10. Leetmod
Leetmod is one more great alternative if you’re looking for more of an overall update for the game.
The mod basically aims to fix anything that the modder thought was broken or missing from the original game, making for a comprehensive add-on that leaves no stone unturned.
It includes everything like improved hit detection parameters, anti-camping measures, spawn protection, and minor bug fixes.
More than that, you’ll get loads of new content as well – including new game modes, maps, and even editable classes.
9. Reign of the Undead – Zombies
As the saying goes, Call of Duty wouldn’t really be COD without zombies.
With a zombie mode recently teased for the upcoming Cold War game, don’t think that it’s the first time something like this has been done.
Reign of the Undead – Zombies is also the first multiplayer-centered mod on the list, offering a co-op zombie mode you can enjoy with some friends.
What sets this one apart from other zombie modes is that it focuses more on survival gameplay rather than run and gun shooting.
You’ll have to be tactical in how you approach combat as it’s easy to attract a horde and get swarmed.
8. Frontlines FOREVER
Speaking of playing with friends, there are so many multiplayer mods for this game. You basically can’t run out of options.
Frontlines FOREVER is one mod which already boasts an unlimited amount of replayability – which explains the “FOREVER” in its name.
The mod is huge. With 46 brand new game modes, random objectives, and tons of other features that make for an endless combination of possible ways any game can play out.
7. Hide ‘n Seek (Prop Hunt) Mod
CoD fans who often enjoy playing with a group of friends will know that sometimes you’re simply looking for ways to goof around.
Hide ‘n Seek is definitely that “goofing around” mod, making for a fun mini-game of sorts that you can enjoy with some friends within COD4:MW.
The mod is a Prop Hunt game mode, where one player acts as a seeker tasked with finding the other players around the map.
The hiders are given the capability to disguise themselves to fit with the surroundings, being able to mimic pretty much anything from carboard boxes to satellite dishes.
6. BraXi’s Death Run Mod
BraXi’s Death Run Mod is another interesting option if you’re looking for even more game modes.
It basically places you in different escape rooms, where your only goal is to escape.
What makes things interesting is that the rooms are littered with different traps and obstacles.
It’s almost like a platformer mini-game within COD, and I definitely recommend giving it a try.
5. PeZBOT – Multiplayer Bots
Another quick and easy way to up your multiplayer is by adding some bots to your lobbies.
You could either use them to fill up the server, or team up with friends and practice against teams of AI.
If that’s something you enjoy, you’re going to want to a copy of PeZBOT.
The base game doesn’t include the ability to add bots to the game, so this is the only way to do so.
4. Roll The Dice Mod
Up next we have a mod that was originally developed for Modern Warfare 2. And it’s incredible.
The mod became so popular for MW2 that creator Ragnirok Connection decided to make a version for COD4:MW as well.
What makes it fun? At every spawn, you’re given the opportunity to roll for a random powerup. You can get anything from invisibility, super speed, thermal vision, or even triple HP.
You’ll have to try your luck, as there are negative rolls as well, where you can have sprinting disabled or lose HP from firing your weapon as examples.
3. Kill the King
Similar to Hide ‘n Seek, Kill the King takes the 1vMany playstyle and takes the intensity up quite a bit.
Players are first divided into two groups – where one solo player is assigned to be an assassin, one as the king, and the rest as the king’s guardian.
It’s the assassin’s role to kill the king on his own, while the guardians protect him.
What makes it more exciting is that each fallen guardian is transferred over to the assassin’s team once killed, making it increasingly challenging to win the round.
2. The Stargate CoD4
The COD series is probably about as far from fantasy as you can get.
That didn’t stop modder herc05 from giving us this fantastical fantasy crossover.
Stargate CoD4 merges his love for COD with the science-fiction series Stargate.
The mod currently only supports multiplayer and will take you (and your friends) into the fantasy world of Stargate.
1. Star Wars Mod: Galactic Warfare
Lastly we have another science-fiction mod, this time based around the popular Star Wars franchise.
As you can tell from most of my other lists, I’m pretty much a sucker for anything Star Wars.
And this time is no different.
The mod basically transforms your game into a Battlefront-esque shooter within COD4:MW – complete with blasters, droids, and everything else Star Wars.
May the force be with you.
